Trixie Bet Explained: 3 Selections, 4 Bets

How the Trixie bet works — 3 doubles and a treble from 3 selections, why you need at least 2 winners, and how it compares to a Patent.

What Is a Trixie?

A Trixie is a 4-bet system built from 3 selections: 3 doubles and 1 treble. Like the Yankee, it doesn't include singles, so at least 2 of your 3 selections need to win before you get any return.

The 4 Lines

With three selections A, B and C, a Trixie covers: 3 doubles (AB, AC, BC) and 1 treble (ABC). A £1 Trixie costs £4 total, or £8 each-way.

With exactly 2 winners, you collect on the one double that combines them. With all 3 winning, you collect on all 3 doubles plus the treble — all four lines pay out, and the treble in particular can produce a large return since it multiplies all three sets of odds together.

Trixie vs Patent

A Patent uses the same 3 selections but adds 3 singles, making it a 7-bet system instead of 4. That means a Patent guarantees a return from just 1 winner, where a Trixie needs 2. The Patent costs more per unit stake for that extra coverage. If you're fairly confident at least 2 of your 3 selections will win, the Trixie is the more efficient way to combine them; if you want a safety net for a single winner, the Patent is worth the extra 3 lines.
